LEXINGTON — The No. 17 Tennessee Volunteers put on an offensive clinic Saturday night, defeating Kentucky 56–34 in a high-scoring SEC matchup. With the win, Tennessee improved to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in SEC play, while Kentucky continued to struggle, falling to 2-5 overall and 0-5 in conference action.
Quarterback Joey Aguilar once again proved why he’s one of the most dynamic passers in the country. The senior transfer was sensational, completing 20 of 26 passes for 396 yards and three touchdowns. His composure and accuracy under pressure set the tone early, as the Volunteers built a commanding lead and never looked back.
Aguilar spread the ball around to perfection, connecting with three different receivers who each surpassed 100 yards. Chris Brazzell II led the way with 138 yards and a touchdown, Mike Matthews added 107 yards and a score, and Braylon Staley contributed 105 yards, giving Tennessee a balanced and explosive passing attack. The offensive line also held firm, allowing Aguilar time to find open targets downfield.
Defensively, Tennessee wasn’t perfect, giving up 34 points, but the unit came up with crucial stops when needed. Which included two red zone stands in the third quarter that halted Kentucky’s momentum. For Kentucky, quarterback Cutter Boley finished with 330 passing yards and 5 touchdowns, while wide receiver DJ Miler added 121 yards with two touchdowns. The Wildcats showed flashes of offensive rhythm but couldn’t keep pace with the Vols’ relentless scoring.
413’s Bottomline
Tennessee’s offense looks like it’s hitting its stride at the right time. Joey Aguilar’s command, accuracy, and leadership have transformed the Vols into one of the SEC’s most explosive teams. With three conference wins and momentum building, Tennessee remains in the hunt for a strong postseason push. The big question that remains for Tennessee is the possible comeback of Vols star cornerbacks Jermod McCoy and Rickey Gibson III being back next week versus the Sooners. Kentucky, meanwhile, is still searching for answers on defense and consistency on offense. Despite solid individual efforts, the Wildcats’ inability to stop big plays continues to be their undoing.
