EUGENE — In the final game of the first round, the Oregon Ducks showcased their offensive depth and explosiveness, defeating James Madison 51–34 in an entertaining but decisive College Football Playoff matchup.

Oregon struck early and often, jumping out to a commanding lead behind sharp quarterback play and aggressive play calling. The Ducks spread the field horizontally and vertically, forcing James Madison’s defense to defend every blade of grass. Big plays through the air and timely runs allowed Oregon to seize control in the first half.

Quarterback Dante Moore delivered one of his most complete performances of the season, accounting for multiple touchdowns and demonstrating command of Oregon’s fast-paced offense. The Ducks converted red-zone opportunities efficiently, preventing James Madison from ever fully closing the gap.

To their credit, the Dukes refused to fade quietly. James Madison answered with several scoring drives of its own by the leadership of Alonza Barnett III and Wayne Knight. James Madison used tempo and creativity to exploit Oregon’s defense and keep the score respectable into the second half. However, every surge was met with an immediate response from the Ducks, who consistently reestablished control with explosive scoring plays.

Oregon’s ability to answer adversity and maintain offensive rhythm ultimately proved decisive. A late scoring run in the fourth quarter put the game out of reach and allowed the Ducks to close out a convincing victory.

With the win, Oregon advances to the Orange Bowl quarterfinal, where a showdown with Texas Tech awaits. James Madison exits the playoff having proven it belongs on the national stage, while Oregon continues its march toward a potential championship run.

413’s Bottomline

The first round of the expanded College Football Playoff delivered everything it promised — contrasting styles, dramatic moments, and decisive performances. With the field now narrowed, the quarterfinals set the stage for a loaded New Year’s slate featuring traditional powers and rising challengers alike.
