LUBBOCK — No. 8 Texas Tech delivered a statement win on home turf, defeating the unbeaten No. 7 BYU Cougars 29–7. Texas Tech struck early and often. After BYU muffed a punt deep in its own territory on the first drive, Tech capitalized with a 47-yard field goal.

The Red Raiders quarterback Behren Morton was calm, cool, and collected throughout his entire performance. Morton recorded 219 yards through the air and a 9-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Douglas that extended the lead 10-0. That set the tone. The Red Raiders extended their lead in the second quarter with another field goal, entering halftime ahead 13-0.

The third quarter brought more of the same: strong defensive play from Tech and an inability for BYU to gain traction offensively. The Red Raiders tacked on a third field goal to make it 16-0. Later in the game, Tech added a fourth field goal to pad the lead to 19.

However, Texas Tech’s running back Cameron Dickey was the offensive impact player that fueled the fire for this dynamic offense. Dickey, rushed for 121 yards with twenty-three carries and a score in the fourth quarter. BYU’s only score came late when freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier found Chase Roberts for a six-yard touchdown pass.

Standout Performers & Turning Points

• For Texas Tech, kicker Stone Harrington was exceptional, converting five field goals (from 47, 39, 34, 29 and 27 yards), showcasing the Red Raiders’ ability to consistently move into scoring range even if the offense stalled.

• Linebacker Jacob Rodriguez led the charge defensively, recording 14 tackles, an interception, and a fumble recovery—his presence disrupted BYU’s game plan all afternoon.

• BYU was held to just 255 total yards, including only 67 rushing yards, a season-low output for the Cougars, whose strengths this year had been ball control and scoring efficiency.

• Tech’s balanced approach — winning in field position, special teams’ execution, and stout defense — controlled the game flow and never let BYU find momentum.

413’s Bottomline

This was a statement performance by Texas Tech: not just a win, but a dominant one against a top ten ranked and undefeated opponent. They showed they can beat a dangerous program in all three phases of the game. For BYU, this is a reality check… the offense stalled, the rushing attack was stifled, and turnovers and special-teams miscues turned an undefeated run into a lopsided defeat.

The Red Raiders now position themselves as genuine contenders in the Big 12 and possibly the College Football Playoff conversation. BYU will need to regroup quickly if they still have hopes of a conference title run.
