Spartans withstand road test behind late execution

STATE COLLEGE — Facing a gritty Penn State team on the road, No. 9 Michigan State passed a critical early-season test with a 76–72 victory in Big Ten action. The Spartans had to earn every possession, overcoming turnovers and a hostile environment before pulling away in the final minutes.

Sophomore Divine Ugochukwu was the catalyst for Michigan State’s offense, pouring in 23 points while knocking down all five of his three-point attempts. Each basket seemed to come at a crucial moment, particularly in the second half when Penn State threatened to take control. Ugochukwu’s confidence and shot-making gave the Spartans a much-needed spark when their offense stagnated.

Michigan State also received key contributions in the paint, with Jaxon Kohler recording a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds) and Carson Cooper adding 10 points. While the Spartans committed a season-high 17 turnovers, their rebounding advantage and timely perimeter shooting allowed them to survive.

Penn State was far from overmatched. Freddie Dilione V matched Ugochukwu with 23 points, showcasing his scoring versatility and keeping the Nittany Lions within one possession late. Penn State’s energy and defensive effort forced Michigan State into uncomfortable situations but missed opportunities in the closing minutes proved costly.

For Michigan State, the win underscored the importance of execution and poise in conference play. While there are areas to clean up, escaping with a road victory against a motivated opponent is the type of result that builds momentum as the Big Ten grind begins.
