TUSCALOOSA — In one of the biggest upsets of the season, No. 11 Oklahoma stunned No. 4Alabama, beating the Crimson Tide 23–21 in front of a hostile Bryant-Denny Stadium crowd. Oklahoma would deliver the first punch. After Alabama missed a punt that flipped field position, the Sooners took advantage when Eli Bowen intercepted a pass and returned it 87 yards for a touchdown, giving Oklahoma a 10–0 lead in the first quarter.
Alabama responded in the second quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run from Daniel Hill, and later struck again when Ty Simpson found tight end Josh Cuevas for a scoring pass putting the Tide ahead briefly. But Oklahoma answered before halftime, grinding out a drive capped by a 20-yard rushing touchdown from John Mateer, making it 17–14.
In the second half, Oklahoma leaned on its strong defense and special teams. A 52-yard field goal by Tate Sandell extended the lead, and late in the fourth, after key turnovers by Alabama, Sandell knocked home a 24-yard kick to put the Sooners up 23–21. Alabama threatened on their final drive, but Oklahoma’s defense held on, including a fourth-down stop and the Sooners ran out the clock to pull off the upset.
Standout Performers & Key Moments
• Eli Bowen (Oklahoma): Delivered the game-changing play with his 87-yard pick-six, setting the tone for the Sooner upset.
• Kip Lewis (Oklahoma): Two sacks, consistent pressure, and a relentless presence in the backfield frustrated Alabama’s offensive rhythm.
• John Mateer (Oklahoma): Accounted for his team’s second touchdown on a well-executed 20-yard run. He managed 161 total yards (138 passing) while protecting the football in a hostile environment.
• Tate Sandell (Oklahoma): Perfect on his field-goal attempts, including the game-winner, and made huge plays on special teams.
• Ty Simpson (Alabama): Threw for 326 yards, but the Tide’s mistakes — two turnovers and a critical fumble — proved costly.
413’s Bottomline
This game is the kind of signature win Oklahoma needs for a serious playoff push. Their defense created havoc with three takeaways, and the offense did just enough when it mattered most. Special teams also came through in a pressure-packed moment.
For Alabama, this loss is a stark reminder that talent isn’t enough. Despite moving the ball, the Crimson Tide couldn’t protect it. Mistakes piled up, and in the margin-for-error world of the SEC title and CFP race, this one could be fatal.
