NORMAN — No. 8 Ole Miss came into Saturday’s matchup with a chip on its shoulder and left with a statement win, defeating No. 13 Oklahoma 34–26 in a battle that lived up to its top 15 billing. The Rebels improved to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in SEC play, while Oklahoma dropped to 6-2 (2-2 SEC) as their comeback attempt fell short in the final quarter.
Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss played with poise all afternoon, completing 24 of 44 passes for 315 yards and a touchdown. While the Rebels didn’t light up the scoreboard early, Chambliss kept the offense steady and spread the ball effectively to his talented receiving corps. Winston Watkins Jr. was his top target, hauling in six receptions for 111 yards, including several key third-down conversions that extended drives.
The ground game once again proved to be the foundation of Lane Kiffin’s attack. Kewan Lacy shouldered the load with 27 carries for 78 yards and two touchdowns, consistently grinding out tough yards between the tackles. His ability to wear down Oklahoma’s front seven was critical in the second half, as the Rebels put together multiple clock-eating drives.
Defensively, Ole Miss came up with timely stops when it mattered most. Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer had success moving the ball through the air, including a 76-yard strike for a touchdown to Isaiah Sategna III who had a career high of 131 receiving yards, but the Rebels defense wouldn’t budge much in the final act.
413’s Bottomline
Ole Miss continues to look every bit like a legitimate playoff threat. Chambliss’ steady leadership, combined with a physical running game and opportunistic defense, has the Rebels poised for a strong finish. Oklahoma remains dangerous but missed red-zone opportunities proved costly against one of the SEC’s most balanced teams.
